- Anthem

PRICE: 16.49

A new solo album from one of the great masters of the acoustic guitar. Ralph Towner has appeared in many contexts for ECM since 1972, but it is perhaps his outstanding solo recitals which most clearly emphasise both his improvisational brilliance and his finely-wrought compositional sense. The dictionary defines an anthem as a solemn song of praise; there are several on this disc. Most are written by Towner himself and played with the "almost oriental sense of balance and dignity" that the New York Times long ago singled out as hallmarks of Ralph's work, but the repertoire here also includes Charles Mingus's solemn song of praise in memory of Lester Young, "Goodbye, Pork Pie Hat" as well as "Gloria's Step", written by the late Scott LaFaro.

- April

Fascinating ECM debut by Swiss/Dutch singer Abbuehl and her young band includes original compositions, music of Carla Bley, settings of E.E. Cummings, a radical remake of "'Round Midnight", and a midnight raga. Abbuehl's mentors have included new jazz singer Jeanne Lee and Indian classical vocalist Prabha Atre, but "April" shows that she is more than the sum of her influences.Critical Acclaim:"An individual singer with a preference for unusual repertoire. With a glowing, warm and flexible voice of great possibility, she delivers surprising interpretations even of well-known material. Her own compositions don't pale at all (in comparison to) the songs she interprets by, among others, Carla Bley and Ornette Coleman." - Trouw "She puts a spell on the listener!" - The Times of India "Being able to sing like she does...with a voice in which expression and technique go hand in hand - this is a matter of talent. This is somebody going her own way. Her voice is the driving motor of the band, as well as an instrument amongst the other ones." - VRIJ Nederland "With her warm timbre, she is above everything else a creator of mood, a singer who improvises with sound, melody and breath...Iconoclastic arrangements, a strong group sound - an interesting debut." - Jazz NU "A voice with depth...and a group that masters the connection between past and present." - Cash
